Our History
A Legacy of Care in the Northland
Beacon Mental Health, formerly Tri-County Mental Health Services, began in 1973 as a program of North Kansas City Hospital, created to serve the mental health needs of Northland residents.
In 1990, Tri-County became an independent nonprofit organization, continuing its mission to provide essential behavioral health and substance use services to Clay, Platte, and Ray counties in Missouri. In 2023, Tri-County Mental Health Services proudly rebranded as Beacon Mental Health, continuing to offer the same trusted services while embracing a fresh identity and renewed vision for the future through a new name and logo.
As the Northland region has grown, so has Beacon. Today, we serve over 9,500 individuals annually through a comprehensive network of providers offering accessible, cost-effective care across urban, suburban, and rural communities.
Beacon remains the safety-net provider for those facing serious mental illness or substance use disorders—especially uninsured and low-income residents. With an average household income of just $9,153 among our clients, 81% are uninsured, underinsured or rely on Medicaid. Our services span crisis intervention, outpatient therapy, psychiatric care, substance use treatment, housing & employment support, specialized programs for children, older adults, and justice-involved individuals.
