Narcan (naloxone) is an FDA approved medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids in the brain. It is safe, easy to administer, and effective when used promptly. Narcan can be lifesaving during an opioid use emergency. Because anyone may encounter someone experiencing an opioid related emergency, we encourage community members, even those who do not use opioids themselves, to carry Narcan as a precaution, much like a first aid kit.
Fentanyl test strips serve as another important layer of protection. Because fentanyl is increasingly found in many substances, even those not typically associated with opioids, test strips can help individuals check drugs for the presence of fentanyl before use. This gives people the knowledge they need to make safer, more informed decisions.
To ensure individuals feel confident using these tools, we have provided access to an educational “How to Use Narcan” video that walks viewers through recognizing an overdose and administering naloxone.
